Direct bookings are the holy grail for any hotelier, but how do you get them? I've put together some simple ideas you can put into action straight action away.

Want more information on how I can help you get even more bookings? Then book a FREE marketing audit for your hotel. Can't wait to hear from you!

1. Use your hotel's online 'store window' - your website!

So many hotels hide essential information potential guests need to know - where to book, how to read reviews, photos of the room, and location information. Make your website super simple to navigate.

Also, if you are concerned about the cost of taking bookings online, research your options, there are so many. A little investment in technology now, will pay dividends later. I can help you to look at the options for this if you aren't currently taking online bookings.

Let Google find you, SEO (search engine optimisation) is an art in itself and it can take a long time and money to get to the 'front page of google', but as a local business you can utilise your power by setting up a 'Google My Business' account, which will list your business for free. You can also take reviews via 'Google My Business' which helps a lot with 'local optimisation', so when someone googles 'Hotels in Nottingham', your hotel will pop up (and best of all, it's free). This is one of the first things I can do as part of a social media package.

Ensure your website is mobile-friendly, again I can test for this, but so can you, just check the site on a range of phones - Android and iPhone to see what the website looks like - most importantly, can people book online?

2. Your best customers are the ones you already have

Award your customers for loyalty, rather than focussing on 'wooing' new guests. When guests book, ask them to opt-in to your mailing list, and once they've left send them a 'thank you for visiting email' with a discount voucher for their next visit. If you don't want to offer a discount, then offer them a free drink, or an upgrade. Inform them to book direct to get this offer.

3. Respond to ALL reviews and try to resolve issues immediately

Resist the temptation to be a 'keyboard warrior' and 'write' the wrongs you have suffered. Ask for a name and contact number and say you are very keen to resolve this. The important thing is to show other guests that when issues occur you are quick to sort them out.

4. Use social media

There are many ways to use social media, you can use it to keep in touch with repeat guests, or entice new ones to visit, advertise deals, events, showcase new rooms - endless possibilities. A nice idea is to retweet and share pictures guests post about your hotel, perhaps at the wedding or at an event, people love to take pictures of themselves on holiday, and often they take pictures in hotels, so get retweeting. Ask guests to use a #hashtag about the hotel, and place this prominently around the hotel. Use this to the max if you offer events or weddings. Setting up a special photo area and offering to take a picture is a great idea too!

5. Use your data

You have a wealth of data at your fingertips in your CRM database - use it, analyse it, seek out the trends and let that inform your marketing strategy. We often think we know what our customers 'look' like, but in reality, we need to look at the data to find out the demographics of our customers. For instance, you can look at the following info to gather some information:

- Where do our bookings come from?

Do they come from booking sites, or by people calling in?

- What's the average spend per room,

and whilst in the hotel?

- What food and drink are guests buying?

- Where do your guests live and work?

- Are they here for work or pleasure?

- Are they visiting independently or in a couple?

If you would like a FREE Marketing Audit, it can help if you already have this information to hand, if not, don't worry, we can find it.

6. Make it cheaper to book direct

When using websites like Trivago, prospective guests can easily see the price differences between neighbouring hotels, guests can also view the price differences between booking sites for your hotel. For instance, Booking.com will charge one price, whilst Expedia charges another. To make booking direct more competitive charge less than the booking sites, even if it's just a £1-£2 cheaper it will entice most people over to your site
